Keratoconus

Effective Treatment for Keratoconus

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is an eye condition that causes irregularities to the shape of the cornea. Although the condition is relatively uncommon, it can lead to vision loss without the right treatment. The condition typically develops during puberty and can continue to progress into adulthood. While there is no way to prevent keratoconus, there are several treatment options that can help.

Our Treatment Options

One of the challenges of treating keratoconus is that traditional contact lenses don’t fit properly on corneas that have been affected by the condition. Traditional contact lenses can cause discomfort and slippage, inhibiting their ability to effectively correct your vision.
At Advanced Eyecare of Chino, we offer specialized contact lenses designed to help patients suffering from keratoconus. Our options include:

  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. One of the most popular choices for keratoconus, RGP lenses have a comfortable fit and are designed to function as a new reflective surface for the eye that compensates for the abnormality of the cornea.
  • Hybrid contact lenses. These are similar to RGP lenses but are more customizable to fit the exact size and shape of the patient’s eyes.
  • Scleral contact lenses. These lenses are designed to cover the entire whites of the eyes (the sclera). They provide more stability than regular contact lenses and are also a great option for patients suffering from dry eyes.
  • Custom soft contact lenses. Using new technology, custom soft contact lenses offer the excellent visual acuity of RGP lenses but with enhanced comfort.
