Make September Count in Healthy Aging

September is Healthy Aging Month. Your eyes are a reflection of your health and the state of your overall health. Throughout the year, there are many things you can do to keep your eyes healthy. Here are five ways to keep your aging eyes healthy this September.

Get Your Eyes Examined Often

Visit a qualified eye professional annually to monitor your eye health. Your eyes are one of the first ways to show signs of aging. Risk factors for developing eye diseases that affect vision include increasing age, family history, race, and exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun and electronics. Taking care of your eyes starts with knowing what is happening inside them. After all, who can see how you’re aging without looking into your eyes?

Eat a Healthy Diet

Diets high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have been conclusively shown to lower your risk of developing age-related diseases like cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. A poor diet can lead to inflammation and deterioration of your eyes’ natural protective coating called the cornea. High-fat foods can also increase the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.

Limit or Stop Smoking

Quitting smoking will significantly reduce your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. Tobacco use has also been identified as a risk factor for age-related glaucoma and is the leading cause of blindness in the US.

Wear Sunglasses That Meet Regulatory Standards

Sunlight can damage your eyes’ surface, creating a condition called solar keratitis. UV exposure is a major risk factor for the development of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Sunglasses not designed to block UVA and UVB light can permanently damage your eyes. Choose sunglasses that meet the standards created by the relevant regulators.

Get Enough Rest

A lack of sleep can tire your eyes and lead to eye strain. Your eyes are also more vulnerable to physical damage from injury, such as in a car accident or being hit in the face. If you don’t get enough sleep, your blood sugar levels can become unstable and contribute to worsening dry eye symptoms.
